Amid the noise of life, the accelerating pace of the days, and mounting pressures, Professor Hassan Yachou’s essay “The Antidote of Calm” appears as a shaded oasis and a place of safety. It is a sincere invitation to students, preachers, and all who seek success to pause and take in the serenity that restores balance to the spirit and clarity to the mind.
The essence of calm: strength that breathes in silence
In Arabic usage, calm denotes stillness of movement and tranquillity of spirit. In life, however, it is neither helplessness nor withdrawal, silence without purpose, or weakness of character. True calm is a high degree of awareness, a crown of wisdom, and a sign of inner strength. A calm person is not provoked by every minor cause and does not surrender judgment to the emotions of the moment. Such a person speaks purposefully, remains silent when silence is wise, and speaks when words can become part of the solution.
Fruits gathered in the gardens of serenity
- Natural dignity and attraction: calm lends its bearer elegance and gravitas and offers tired hearts a reassuring presence. A drop of honey, as the proverb suggests, attracts more than a barrel of bitterness.
- Resilience in life’s storms: while the hasty become confused at the first shock, the calm person stands like a deeply rooted tree, absorbing difficulty, managing crises with composure, and turning hardship into opportunity.
- Focus that illuminates darkness: calm reduces the pressure of routine and protects the mind from distraction, enabling clear insight and decisive choices with less regret.
- Genuine happiness: happiness is not found in noisy status or dazzling wealth, but in a tranquil soul that works diligently and looks with gratitude at what is present rather than what is missing.
How can calm be cultivated? A practical path
Calm is a refined art that requires education and disciplined character. It grows through a number of noble qualities:
- The light of knowledge and wisdom: beneficial knowledge illuminates the mind, and wisdom puts matters in their proper place. Without them, a person is left to wander in anxiety.
- Forgiveness and gentleness: overlooking mistakes, showing mercy, and dealing generously with others build bridges toward a settled conscience.
- Restraint of anger and beautiful patience: true strength belongs to the person who controls the self when angry. Great aims are reached through patience, forbearance, and deliberation.
- Noble character: gentleness beautifies whatever it enters; modesty brings serenity and dignity; and excellence in one’s work makes each step firmer.
- Certainty and consultation: integrity, steadfastness in sound principles, and consultation before decisions provide support and reduce regret and confusion.
- Hopeful optimism: optimism brings composure in the darkest moments and nourishes confidence in divine relief. However high the waves may rise, the believer recalls: “Indeed, my Lord is with me; He will guide me.”
A final reflection
Be like light in darkness, and be a source of calm in the midst of crowds. Reserve quiet time to nourish the spirit and care for the conscience, the hidden world within. Whoever learns when to be silent finds safety, and whoever works with calmness and dignity builds an achievement that passing noise cannot demolish.
